El Vocho - The Beetle

The story of the Beetle cannot be told without mentioning Mexico, because nowhere else in the world were as many sedans produced as there. In October 1967, unbeknownst to anyone at the time, it became the most popular car among Mexicans, not only because of its ease of repair, accessibility, and off-road capability, but also because there was no other car that could compare.
Production of the Sedan continued at the Puebla plant until July 31, 2003, making it the longest-running production site in the world. With an enormous production run of 1,691,542 Beetles, reaching millions of families, it earned the well-deserved title of "the people's car."
I lived in Mexico City for several years and documented the last two years of the taxi-Vocho in Mexico City, 2008-2009. For safety and comfort reasons, the mayor at the time decided to remove the Beetle from the fleet of vehicles licensed as taxis.
